Christmas Advent Devotional | Day 23

Advent – Day 23

The Lowly Servant. Guest contributor Reverend Patrick Acquah beautifully breaks down the practical application of humility in our lives in a way we can’t afford to ignore. Our Advent season is coming to a close as today marks two days before Christmas. Thank you for all your support. May this season bring you much needed cheer, strength and renewal of spirit and purpose!

Scripture Reading: Philippians 2: 5-9

5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,

 Devotional Thoughts

Christmas is a time of joy, reflection, and celebration—a season to remember the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. But beyond the festivities, Christmas presents us with an opportunity to learn from the One at the center of it all. Like any great biography, the story of Jesus’ life offers lessons for our own, and one of its most striking themes is His extraordinary humility.
Jesus’ humility is a powerful reminder of what it means to serve selflessly. He left His divine throne to dwell among mere men. Born in a manger instead of a palace, to a humble family rather than a royal lineage, He chose a life of simplicity over splendor. Though the world was created through Him, He had “nowhere to lay His head.” He sought out the lowliest of people, mingling with the outcasts of society, so much so that it was said, “the common people heard Him gladly” (Mark 12:37).
The Bible doesn’t just call us to believe in Christ; it exhorts us to imitate Him. His humility is not just an admirable trait but a model for how we should live.

Humility in Our Roles

Whatever your role in life, humility is a transformative virtue that reflects Christ’s character.

•    As a Minister

True ministry is clothed in humility. It’s about serving without seeking recognition, being a “no-name” servant who walks in faithfulness rather than popularity. Jesus Himself washed His disciples’ feet—a task reserved for the lowest servant—demonstrating that leadership in God’s kingdom is marked by service, not status.

•    As a Spouse

Humility can transform a marriage. For wives and husbands alike, it’s the ability to prioritize your spouse’s needs above your own, to listen, and to admit when you’re wrong. It’s about nurturing unity over ego and love over pride.

•    As an Employee

Humility in the workplace means owning your mistakes, apologizing when necessary, and showing respect to colleagues regardless of their position. It’s choosing integrity over arrogance and collaboration over competition.

•    As a Person in Authority

Whether as an employer, a parent, or a leader, humility is vital. It’s the ability to admit when you’re wrong, to acknowledge your faults, and to ask for forgiveness when needed. It also means being open to the ideas and input of others, especially your subordinates or children. Jesus, though fully God, invited input and questions from His disciples, modeling the power of humility in leadership.

Strength in Humility

In a world where pride often masquerades as strength, humility is sometimes seen as a weakness. But nothing could be further from the truth. Humility requires incredible strength—it is the courage to lower yourself, to serve others, and to put God’s will above your own. It’s not a mark of weakness; it’s a mark of godliness.

Walking as Christ Walked

This Christmas, let’s go beyond celebrating the birth of Jesus. Let’s strive to embody His humility in our own lives. Whether in our families, workplaces, or ministries, let us follow the example of the lowly servant who came not to be served, but to serve. Humility is not just a virtue; it is the very essence of Christlikeness. May we walk in it, not just during this season, but every day of our lives.

Reflection

Upon reflection of this piece, what are some areas that we need to apply humility in?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of Christ. Help me to walk as Christ walked: in humility in every area of my life. Deliver me from pride, which only resists my growth. Help me to be more like Jesus. Amen.

Reverend Patrick Acquah is a Lay/Volunteer Pastor at Revival International, Tampa, FL (UDHMM), dedicated to serving God and others with passion and humility.
