Light… Light… Light! 4 days to Christmas. Decorations, gifts, elaborate dinners, lights. Festive activities to set the season apart. Sometimes the reason is lost in the festivities. Yet the reason is everything: celebrating the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ. Whose presence in our lives and hearts represents light. Today we look at Christ, the Light of the world. Read more, as we continue our Advent devotional series from the book of Luke. Remember Advent means “coming,” and we are taking time to reflect on the birth, and second coming of our Lord Jesus in this Christmas season, and its significance to each one of us.
28 he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said: 29 “Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, According to Your word; 30 For my eyes have seen Your salvation 31 Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples, 32 A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people Israel.”
After being prompted by the Holy Spirit, Simeon goes into the temple to bless the baby Jesus. He uses prophetic words that are unusual for that time. He mentions that the life of the Child will be a light that brings revelation. He also mentions “Gentiles” and “Israel” in the same blessing. Digging a little deeper, “Gentiles” referred to all people who were not Jewish either by religion or descent. It also referred to all those who were not God’s covenant people. Today, it would represent all those not in relationship with the Lord God. Gentiles were not respected, not included, and were regarded as unclean. Yet here was Simeon, inferring that God had sent light to the world, and all people, Gentiles included, had access to this light.
I remember times that I have walked into a dark room and stubbed my toe against the leg of furniture. The pain is needless to say, memorable. I also remember times that I have made not so great decisions because I did not shine the light of God’s lamp through prayer. Life without the light of God can be painful. The light in Christ gives us illumination, so we can see more clearly. It also brings revelation so we can understand more fully what God’s will toward us is. His light leads us away from darkness, and fills us with hope.
Jesus says, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” (John 8:12). His light bridges the gap between today’s Jew and Gentile. We all have access to the benefits of God’s covenant as we accept the Lordship of the Lord Jesus. In developing the habit of reading and obeying his word, we release light into our lives. Our paths gradually veer from darkness and deception, and lean toward goodness and hope.
Heavenly Father, thank You for light and truth being released into my life through your Son Jesus Christ. Teach me to walk in your way of light. Deliver me from darkness and deception. Shine your light on my path, that my life will be an illumination of your goodness and your glory. In Jesus name. Amen.
