Deliverance from evil. The greatest hindrance to our faith is the interference of the enemy of our souls. Yet, Jesus came to deliver us from these attacks and torments, and came to give us an abundant life. In this second week of our Advent reflections, we continue to think about Christ, and the significance of His birth to each one of us. We are continuing our journey in the second chapter of Matthew, where we left off last week.
13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.” 14 When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt, 15 and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”
Devotional Thoughts
Once the wise men departed, Joseph received another dream, this time, asking him to flee to Egypt. This direction Joseph received was crucial for his family because Herod sought to harm them. Today, the Lord is still guiding us in many ways, and we need to tune in to His channel to receive those directions. The direction received to go to Egypt may have seemed like a random place selected simply to shelter them from harm. But there was nothing random about Egypt. It was prophesied that Jesus would eventually be called out of Egypt. Hosea 11:1, “When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.” This is another prophecy fulfilled about Christ that further validates his credibility as the promised Messiah.
King Herod intended to destroy this Child, being troubled by his lineage and legitimacy to the throne. Satan, since his fall from heaven, has unleashed his venom upon men, and operates through acts of wickedness such as which Herod engaged in. His intention is to utterly destroy us. It reminds me of a child building an elaborate sandcastle at the beach and a wave comes in, and washes the structure away, barely leaving a mark of it’s prior existence. Given the chance, Satan will come in like a wave, or a flood, to wash away our peace, corrode our faith, attack our bodies, destroy our properties, and seduce us into hell. The Lord, however, is our deliverer, and stands to deliver us from every scheme and trap of this enemy. The birth of Jesus, was truly the advent to the most direct assault to Satan’s campaign of destruction on mankind. In Christ, we are covered!
In the book of John, we learn that the thief comes to steal from us, kill us, and destroy us. In the same verse Jesus explains that He has come to neutralize this agenda, imparting life unto us instead. You may have experienced some devastating things in your life, but Christ is able to restore you. And He is able to deliver you from every evil work of the enemy of our souls.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, I surrender my life, and all that I have been through before you. Deliver me and my loved ones from every evil work. I thank you for abundant life! In Jesus Name. Amen.
