Christmas Advent Devotional | Day 20

Advent – Day 20

The Great Gift? Christ’s birth comes with access to an important and necessary gift. As we prepare for the season, buying gifts, wrapping gifts, and asking for gifts, let us also consider this great gift. Read more about this gift as we continue our Advent devotional series from the book of Luke. Remember Advent means “coming,” and we are taking time to reflect on the birth, and second coming of our Lord Jesus in this Christmas season, and its significance to each one of us.

Scripture Reading: Luke 2: 25-27

25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law,

 Devotional Thoughts

The period within which Christ was born served as an era in which the Holy Spirit is introduced to us in a new way. In the Old Testament we see the Holy Spirit working primarily through the prophets, priests and kings. In the advent of Christ’s birth, the Holy Spirit became active in a different way. Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, was filled with the Holy Spirit and recognized that the child Mary carried during her visit was “The Lord.” She could only have known that by the Holy Spirit. Mary herself conceived the Child by the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit. In this portion of scripture, Simeon, described as devout and just, had the Holy Spirit upon him. It had been revealed to him that he would not die until he saw the birth of the Messiah. The Holy Spirit subsequently moved him to go to the temple at the same time Mary and Joseph would be there, so he could bless the Child Messiah as the Lord God had instructed.  .

It is a blessed time we live in to have the Holy Spirit with us. Jesus said in John 16:7 that it was necessary for Him to depart physically from the earth so that the Holy Spirit would come. The Holy Spirit’s work is to serve as a lamp and a guide in our spiritual walk. The Holy Spirit helps us understand the scriptures, He convicts us of sin, He prompts us in decision making, He reminds us of God’s word, He teaches us how to pray and what to pray for, and leads us to walk according to the will of God. Jesus’ word in John 16:7 was that it was necessary for Him to depart so that the Holy Spirit could be sent to us. Looking at this very abbreviated work of the Holy Spirit in our lives, the word “necessary” is far form being an exaggeration.

Reflection

The Lord God says that if we know how to give good gifts to our children, how much more will He give us the Holy Spirit if we ask Him (Luke 11:9-13). The implication is that the Holy Spirit is a gift for us. He also invites us to ask for the Holy Spirit. In this season as we make our lists of gifts, let us include the gift of having the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for sending your Holy Spirit to guide us and help us in our spiritual walk. According to your word, we ask for more of your Holy Spirit. Lead us to walk in your ways and in your will. Amen.
